About the Project

This beautiful Victorian house in East Nashville is home to a single father and two young children. He loves to cook and entertain, and had initially made this space the dining room adjacent to the kitchen. When we saw the layout of the house, we suggested that this room become a relaxed family room for the kids to lounge and do homework in while he cooked. We suggested moving the formal dining space to one of the rooms at the front of the house, which are original to the 1902 construction. Changing the layout of the house allows the front rooms to be more guest-ready in appearance while the back of the house can be a relaxed family space. This particular room is a later addition and features a modern picture window and exposed brick, which was originally the outside facade of the house. Because of the beautiful natural light, and backyard location of the room, we chose to leave the windows bare and create a transitional, comfortable, family-friendly feel.

The large sectional facing the FRAME TV allows the whole family plus guests to settle down for a movie night, while the small desk installed precisely between the archways provides a space for the kids to work on homework while dad cooks. When not in use, the TV appears as a piece of artwork, allowing the record player to take center stage.
